Question

If the average of 5 consecutive numbers is 24, then the smallest number is:

A.

21

B.

22

C.

23

D.

20

Correct option is B

Given:

Average of five consecutive numbers =24

Formula Used:

Average=Sum of observationsNumber of observationsAverage = \frac{Sum\ of\ observations}{Number\ of\ observations}

Solution:

Let the consecutive numbers be x,x+1,x+2,x+3,x+4x ,x+1,x+2,x+3,x+4 respectively

Then total sum of numbers =x+x+1+x+2+x+3+x+4=5x+10 x+x+1+x+2+x+3+x+4= 5x +10

Average of numbers = 24

Total of numbers =5×24=120 5 \times 24 = 120

So,

5x+10=1205x+10 =120

5x=1105x=110

x=22x=22

Smallest number is x=22 x =22
