Question

If one-third of a number is 6 more than the number itself, then find the number.

A.

-5

B.

-9

C.

-7

D.

-6

Correct option is B

Given:

One- third of a number is 6 more than the number itself

Solution:

Let the number be x

Then one-third of the number = 13ofx=x3\frac{1}{3} of x = \frac{x}{3}

x3=x+6\frac{x}{3} = x + 6

x3x=6\frac{x}{3} -x = 6

x3x3=6\frac{x-3x}{3} = 6

-2x = 18

x= -9
