Question

If 5+2323=x+y3,\frac{5 + 2\sqrt3}{2-\sqrt3} = x + y\sqrt3, then (x, y) = ?

A.

(4, 9)

B.

(2, 3)

C.

(9,16)

D.

(16, 9)

Correct option is D

Given:

5+2323=x+y3\frac{5 + 2\sqrt3}{2-\sqrt3} = x + y\sqrt3

Solution:

5+2323=x+y3\frac{5 + 2\sqrt3}{2-\sqrt3} = x + y\sqrt3

Rationalizing the LHS side

5+2323×2+32+3=x+y3\frac{5 + 2\sqrt3}{2-\sqrt3}\times \frac{2+\sqrt3}{2+\sqrt3} = x + y\sqrt3

(5+23)(2+3)(2)(3)2=x+y3\frac{(5 + 2\sqrt3)(2+ \sqrt{3})}{(2)^-(\sqrt3)^2} = x + y\sqrt3

10+53+43+2(3)43=x+y3\frac{10+5\sqrt{3} +4\sqrt{3} + 2(3) }{4-3} = x + y\sqrt3

16+93=x+y316+9\sqrt{3}= x + y\sqrt3

Comparing LHS and RHS

We get x =16 and y = 9

Hence (x,y) = (16,9)
