The number of students at the end of the second year = 1274

Increase in the first year = 12%

Decrease in the second year = 9% 

Solution: 

Let the number of students at present = x 

Then, 

x×112100×91100=1274 x=1274×100112×10091 x=1250x \times \frac{112}{100}\times \frac{91}{100} = 1274 \\ \ \\ x = 1274 \times \frac{100}{112}\times \frac{100}{91} \\ \ \\ x = 1250​​
