Question

By selling an article for ₹21, a dealer makes a profit of 20%. By how much should he increase his selling price (in ₹) so as to make a profit of 50%?

A.

8.25

B.

5.25

C.

6.25

D.

7.25

Correct option is B

Given:
Initial Selling Price (SP1) = ₹21
Profit1 = 20%
Profit2 required = 50%
Formula Used:
CostPrice(CP)=SP×100100+Profit% NewSP(SP2)=CP×100+Profit2%100Cost Price (CP) = SP \times \frac{100}{100 + \text{Profit}\%}\\ \ \\New SP (SP2) = CP \times \frac{100 + \text{Profit2}\%}{100}
Solution:
Calculate CP: CP = 21×100120=21×5621 \times \frac{100}{120} = \frac{21 \times 5}{6} = ₹17.5
Calculate SP2 for 50% profit: SP2 = 17.5×150100=17.5×1.5 17.5 \times \frac{150}{100} = 17.5 \times 1.5 = ₹26.25
Increase in SP = SP2 - SP1 = 26.25 - 21 = ₹5.25
So the correct answer is (b).
