Question

An amount of Rs. 980 is divided among three persons in the ratio of 2 : 6 : 12. The difference between the largest and the smallest shares (in Rs. ) in the distribution is:

A.

546

B.

425

C.

490

D.

511

Correct option is C

Given:
Total amount = ₹980
Ratio = 2 : 6 : 12
Formula Used:
Share of each person=(Ratio of personTotal ratio)×Total amount\text{Share of each person} = \left( \frac{\text{Ratio of person}}{\text{Total ratio}} \right) \times \text{Total amount}
Difference between largest and smallest shares = Largest share - Smallest share
Solution:
Sum of ratios = 2 + 6 + 12 = 20
Smallest share = 220×980\frac{2}{20} × 980 = ₹98

Largest share = 1220×980\frac{12}{20} × 980 = ₹588
Difference = ₹588 − ₹98 = ₹490
Alternate Method:
Let ratio be 2x : 6x : 12x
Total = 20x = 980 → x = 49
Smallest = 2x = 98
Largest = 12x = 588
Required difference = 588 − 98 = ₹490
