Question

A vessel is one-fourth full of water. After adding 10 cups of water to it, the vessel gets three-fourth full. Find the capacity of the vessel in cups.

A.

20

B.

25

C.

27

D.

22

Correct option is A

Solution:

Let the total capacity of the vessel be xx cups.

Initially, the vessel is one-fourth full, so the amount of water in the vessel is: = x4\frac{x}{4}

After adding 10 cups of water, the vessel becomes three-fourth full, so the amount of water is: = 3x4\frac{3x}{4}

The difference between the water levels before and after adding 10 cups is equal to 10 cups:  = 3x4x4=10\frac{3x}{4}-\frac{x}{4}=10

3xx4=10\frac{3x-x}{4}=10

2x4=10\frac{2x}{4}=10 , x2=10\frac{x}{2}=10

x=10×2=20x= 10\times2=20

The capacity of vassel is 20 cups.

Thus the correct answer is (A)
