Question

A steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between two ports in 6 h. It covers the same distance upstream in 8h. If the speed of the stream is 3 km/h, then the speed of the streamer in still water is:

A.

10 km/h

B.

21 km/h

C.

10.375 km/h

D.

20.5 km/h

Correct option is B

Given:
A steamer goes downstream and covers the distance between two ports in 6 h.
It covers the same distance upstream in 8h.
 speed of the stream is 3 km/h,
Formula Used;
speed = distance ×\timestime
Solution:
speed of stream =3 km/h
 let speed of boat = b km/h
speed in upstream =b-3 km/h
speed in downstream =b+3 km/h
according to question = distance travelled in upstream and downstream is same
 (b+3)×\times6=(b-3)×8
6b +18 =  8b -24
2b =42
b=21 km/h
Thus, correct option is (b).
