Question

A shopkeeper provide successive discounts of 5% and 4%, which are equivalent to a single discount of ________.

A.

9%

B.

8%

C.

9.2%

D.

8.8%

Correct option is D

Given:
Successive discounts =5% and 4%

Formula Used:
Successive discount = X + Y - XY100\frac{XY}{100}
Where,
X = First discount
Y = Second discount.
Solution:
Let us take first two discounts i.e. X = 5%, Y = 4%.
=> Successive discount = X + Y -XY100\frac{XY}{100}
=> Successive discount = 5 + 4 - 5×4100=90.2=8.8%\frac{5 \times4}{100} = 9-0.2 = 8.8\%
Hence, one single equivalent discount is 8.8%

Alternate Method:

Let MP be 100
SP after discount = 100 × 95% × 96% = 91.2.
Hence, Discount = 100 - 91.2 = 8.8%
