Question

A ship is approaching towards a shore. When it is 32 miles from the shore, a plane having speed 15 times that of the ship is sent to deliver supplies. How far from the seashore does the seaplane catch up with the ship?

A.

30 miles

B.

25 miles

C.

15 miles

D.

10 miles

Correct option is A

Given:
The ship is 32 miles away from the shore.
A seaplane is sent from the shore to catch the ship.
The plane's speed is 15 times the speed of the ship.
Both are moving toward each other.
Formula Used:
Distance = Speed × Time
Solution:
Let the speed of the ship be s
Then, the speed of the plane is 15s
Let the time taken to meet be t hours
The ship travels s × t miles
The plane travels 15s × t miles
Together, the distance they cover is equal to 32 miles:
s × t + 15s × t = 32
16s × t = 32
t = 3216s=2s\frac{32}{16s} = \frac{2}{s}
Now, distance traveled by the plane = Speed × Time = 15s × 2s\frac 2s = 30 miles
