Question

A number is first decreased by 18% and the resulting number is then increased by 25%. What is the overall percentage change in the original number?

A.

Decrease by 2.5%

B.

Increase by 3.5%

C.

Increase by 2.5%

D.

Decrease by 3.5%

Correct option is C

Given:
Number is first decreased by 18%
Then number is increased by 25%
Solution:
Let the number be 100
Number after decrement becomes:
100- 18% of 100
=82
After increasing 25% it will become:
82+ 25% of 82
=82+20.5 =102.5
Increase in number = 102.5-100 = 2.5
Percentage increase = 2.5100×100\frac{2.5}{100} × 100 = 2.5%
Alternate method:
Successive change = x+y+xy100x + y + \frac{xy}{100}
-18 +25 + (18)(25)100\frac{(-18)(25)}{100}_
7-4.5=2.5%
