Question

A mixture contains acid and water in the ratio of 7: 4. If 2 litres of water is added to it, then the ratio of acid and water becomes 7: 5. What is the quantity of acid in the mixture?

A.

20 litres

B.

21 litres

C.

7 litres

D.

14 litres

Correct option is D

Given:

Acid to water ratio = 7:4 initially.
After adding 2 liters of water, the ratio becomes 7:5.

Formula Used:
Let the quantity of acid = 7x and water = 4x.
New ratio after adding 2 liters: 7x / (4x + 2) = 7/5.

Solution:
7x / (4x + 2) = 7 / 5
=> 5(7x) = 7(4x + 2)
=> 35x = 28x + 14
=> 7x = 14
=> x = 2.
Thus, the quantity of acid = 7x = 7 × 2 = 14 liters.
