Question

A can complete a piece of work in 24 days. He worked for 21 days and then B finished the remaining work in 5 days. In how many days can A and B together finish the work?

A.

45 days

B.

40 days

C.

15 days

D.

24 days

Correct option is C

Given:

A can complete the work in 24 days.

A works for 21 days.

B completes the remaining work in 5 days.

Formula Used:

Work done = Time × Efficiency

Solution:

Let the efficiencies of A and B be  A units/day and B units/day respectively.

Total work  = A×24=A×21+B×5A \times 24 = A \times 21 + B \times 5

3A = 5B

AB=53\frac{A}{B} = \frac{5}{3}

Total work = 24A = 24×524 \times 5 = 120 units

A and B together finish the work in:

120A+B\frac{120}{A + B} = 1208 \frac{120}{8} = 15 days
