A boat can cover 60 km downstream in three hours. If the boat covers 48 km still water in 3 hours, then find the time taken (in hours) by the boat to cover 72 km upstream?

Given:

Time taken by boat to cover 60 km downstream = 3 hours

Time taken by to cover 48 km in still water = 3 hours 

Formula Used:

Upstream speed = speed of boat - speed of stream 

Downstream speed = speed of boat + speed of stream 

Distance = speed x time

Explanation

Downstream speed of the boat = 60/3= 20 km/hr

Still water speed of the boat = 48/3= 16 km/hr
Speed of stream = 20 – 16 = 4 km/hr
Required time = 72/(16-4) = 6 hours
