• Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, launched the first-ever Khelo India Para Games 2023 logo and mascot Ujjwala in New Delhi.

Key points

• ‘Ujjwala’- a sparrow, was unveiled as the official mascot of Khelo India – Para Games 2023. 
• The little sparrow is a symbol of the pride of Delhi and its uniqueness portrays determination and empathy. 
• Ujjwala, as the mascot of Khelo India – Para Games 2023, is a reminder that strength comes in many forms and the human spirit is unbreakable.

• Prime Minister set in motion the process of setting up a committee that will go into the issue of sub-categorisation of the Madiga community within the Scheduled Castes.
• It was a long-pending demand.

Issue 

• The Madiga community constitutes at least 50% of the total Scheduled Castes in Telangana. 
• The 2011 census puts the total SCs at a little over 15% of the population of the State.
• For years, the Madiga community has said that the benefits of reservation under the SC category have been cornered by the Mala community, with the Madigas being left out.
• The Madigas have been struggling since 1994 for sub-categorisation

About Madiga Community

• Madiga is a Telugu caste, mainly living in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, with a small minority in Tamil Nadu. 
• Madigas are historically associated with the work of tannery, leatherwork and small handicrafts. 
• Today, most are agricultural labourers.

• Providing relief to patients with rare diseases across India, the Union Health Ministry has made available generic drugs to support the care and treatment of four ailments: Tyrosinemia-Type 1, Gauchers Disease, Wilson’s Disease, and the Dravet-Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.
• The Ministry is also in the process of making available drugs for more rare diseases, including Phenylketonuria and Hyperammonemia

About 

• A rare disease is a health condition of particularly low prevalence that affects a small number of people. 
• It collectively afflicts 6% to 8% of the population in any country at any given time, so India could have 8.4 crore to 10 crore such cases
• Nearly 80% of these diseases are genetic in nature.

• Gaucher’s disease or Gaucher disease (GD) is a genetic disorder in which glucocerebroside (a sphingolipid, also known as glucosylceramide) accumulates in cells and certain organs. 
• The disorder is characterized by bruising, fatigue, anemia, low blood platelet count and enlargement of the liver and spleen, and is caused by a hereditary deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase (also known as glucosylceramidase), which acts on glucocerebroside

• Wilson’s disease is a genetic disorder in which excess copper builds up in the body. 
• Wilson’s disease is caused by a mutation in the Wilson disease protein (ATP7B) gene.
• Wilson’s disease is typically treated with dietary changes and medication. 

• A potential bulk cargo transhipment hub is envisioned in Atlanta Bay near Diglipur in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
• A feasibility study is underway to develop it into a major harbor, considering strategic location and available facilities.

Development of Indira Point as a Tourism Destination:

• Indira Point, the southernmost tip of India, is slated for development as a major tourism destination.

Strategic Harbor Development in Northern A&N Islands:

• Given its strategic location in the northern side of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a 10m draft harbor is deemed essential.
• This development aims to promote high-end tourism and serve other crucial purposes in the region.

• North Korean leader Kim Jong-un celebrated a “new era of a space power” with scientists and his family after the North successfully put a military spy satellite into orbit. 
• Pyongyang’s launch of the “Malligyong-1” was its third attempt at securing a military eye in the sky after many failures

Odisha Governor Raghubar Das and his Chhattisgarh counterpart Biswabhusan Harichandan jointly inaugurated the ‘Odisha Research Centre’ (ORC) and a one-day workshop on ‘Knowledge Traditions of Odisha: A Futuristic Framework’ in Bhubaneswar.

• Centre will represent Odisha’s speciality and will give a new direction to current and social dynamics
• The Odisha Research Centre will research art, culture, archaeology, tradition, literature and sociology of Odisha, political process and political culture, agriculture, commerce, business and industry, development trends of contemporary Odisha, science & technology and healthcare, and future technology. 
• The Centre will also work on smart cities, climate change, environmental protection and sustainable development, semiconductors, and rare earths and advanced minerals

 In a first-of-its-kind study conducted in India, a group of gastroenterologists and hepatologists has detected high prevalence of early gastric cancer in Odisha

Key points

• Gastric cancer has emerged as a major public health concern with incidence and mortality rates growing worldwide. 
• In India, gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer, constituting 7.2 per cent of all cases with higher incidence in northeastern states, comparable to high-incidence areas globally.
• The study conducted by Bhubaneswar-based Sai Institute of Gastroenterology and Liver Sciences (SIGLS) in collaboration with US-based Mayo Clinic and Osaka International Cancer Institute, Japan revealed the prevalence rate of early gastric cancer in the state was around 0.6 per cent. 

Milk production in Odisha has increased threefold in last two decades

Key points

• The state government is providing financial assistance up to Rs 1 crore for entrepreneurship development in dairy sector under Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana
• Under the 5T initiative of the state government, an ultramodern dairy plant of 5 lakh litre capacity per day has been established at Arilo. 
• Around 3 lakh dairy farmers are being benefitted through OMFED and the state government is taking measures like vaccination, deworming of cattle in Odisha.

Key points

• Odisha Pavilion, which was the centre of attraction from day one, maintained its silver streak by regaining the covetous gold medal as ‘Excellence in Display’ in the category of State Pavilion.
• Conceptualized on Odisha’s ancient maritime trade culture, the pavilion with 24 stalls including famous handloom outlets and government departments, promoted the rich cultural heritage, handicrafts and handlooms of the state.

• Backed with a successful, exciting and entertaining inaugural season which reached 164 million households, Ultimate Kho Kho (UKK) is all geared up for its grand second edition
• UKK, promoted by Amit Burman in collaboration with the Kho Kho Federation of India, is dedicated to reinventing and promoting the indigenous sport in a more dynamic and engaging manner.
