In India, the agriculture sector is responsible for more than 60% of methane emissions.

CoP28 Focus: The upcoming CoP28 meeting in Dubai is expected to target methane emissions, alongside the traditional focus on carbon dioxide (CO2), for effective climate action.

Methane’s Role in Climate Change: 

  • Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, despite its relatively short lifespan in the atmosphere.

Sources of Methane Emissions:

  • Agriculture is the largest contributor (for about a quarter of methane emissions). Key sources include Livestock and Rice Cultivation.
  • Energy Sector is the second-largest source (Methane leaks from gas pipelines, fossil fuels and other energy infrastructure)
  • Waste Management: Decomposition of household waste in landfills also releases significant methane quantities.
Key facts about Methane A recent IEA report estimates that rapid cuts in methane emissions linked to the fossil fuel sector could prevent up to 0.1 degrees Celsius of warming by mid-century.

  • It is the second largest contributor to climate change, accounting for around 16% of the warming effect.
  • Methane remains in the atmosphere for only about 10 years, but has a much more powerful warming impact than CO2.
  • Its warming effect is 28-times greater than CO2 over a 100-year timescale.
  • Around 60% of methane emissions are linked to human activity, the IEA says, while most of the remainder is from wetlands.

Survey of India partners with Genesys International for 3D city maps, a pioneering collaboration.

  • These are called ‘Digital Twins,’ 
  • These maps show cities in 3D and, when combined with detailed pictures, help in various planning tasks. 
  • Genesys will work together to create “3D digital twins” for big cities, make a 3D data model for urban areas, and sell geospatial data products using a “content-as-a-service” approach.

Fathima Beevi, the first woman judge in Supreme Court, passes away.

L&T Finance signs financing pact with ADB for $125 mn to support rural borrowers Context

L&T Finance, a non-banking financial company (NBFC), has signed a financing agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) for $125 million to support financing (particularly for women borrowers) in rural and peri-urban areas in India.

  • The funding includes a loan of up to $125 million from ADB and an agreement to get another $125 million from other partners.

  • Velavan Senthilkumar (Tamil Nadu) and Anahat Singh (Delhi) won their maiden men’s and women’s National titles at the 79th National squash championships

  • Satkosia Tiger Reserve comprises two adjoining Sanctuaries of central Odisha named as Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and Baisipalli Sanctuary.
  • These two sanctuaries together covering an area of 963 sq.km. have been notified as Satkosia Tiger Reserve in 2007.
  • It is located in the Angul district of Odisha where the Mahanadi River passes through a 22 km long gorge in the Eastern Ghats mountains. The area is also a part of the Mahanadi elephant reserve.
  • Satkosia is the meeting point of two bio-geographic regions of India; the Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats, contributing to immense biodiversity. The major plant communities are mixed deciduous forests including Sal and riverine forest.
Bhubaneswar-Puri expressway to be developed as growth corridor Context

  • The state government has decided to develop the proposed Bhubaneswar-Puri Expressway as a dedicated growth corridor.
