Dubai Consensus Context

  • The COP-28 countries adopted for transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner.
  • They named it the Dubai Consensus.
  • The aim is to achieve net zero by 2050
India’s vote on Gaza-Israel conflict Context

  • India voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution that called on Israel for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians in accordance with international law and the release of all hostages. 
  • India was among 153 countries who voted in favour of the resolution, where only 10 countries, including the U.S. and Israel, voted against the resolution, and 23 abstained.
New Madhya Pradesh CM Context

  • Mohan Yadav was sworn in as the 19th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh 
  • He is a three-term MLA from Ujjain-Dakshin (South) and a prominent Other Backward Class (OBC) leader
  • Jagdish Devda and Rajendra Shukla took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers.
New Rajasthan CM Context

  • Bhajan Lal Sharma will be sworn in as the 14th Chief Minister of Rajasthan

A report on Road fatalities by WHO Context

A World Health Organization (WHO) report -‘Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023′ stated that Road traffic deaths fell by 5% to 1.19 million annually worldwide between 2010 and 2021, with 108 United Nations member countries reporting a drop

Key facts

    • India registered a 15% increase in fatalities.
    • The total number of road traffic fatalities in India went up to 1.54 lakh in 2021 from 1.34 lakh in 2010
    • The global motor vehicle fleet grew 160% and annual fatality rates per 1 lakh vehicles fell from 79 deaths to 47 deaths, which is a 41% reduction.
    • 28% of global road traffic deaths occurred in the WHO’s South-East Asia Region, 25% in the Western Pacific Region, 19% in the African Region, 12% in the Region of the Americas, 11% in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, and 5% in the European Region.
  • Nine in 10 deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries
New Delhi Declaration Context

  • Representatives from 28 countries and the European Union adopted the “New Delhi Declaration” of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence
  • India is hosting the summit, and will chair the GPAI grouping in 2024. 

Key points

  • It affirms the countries’ commitment to principles for responsible stewardship of trustworthy AI rooted in democratic values and human rights and promoting trustworthy, responsible, sustainable and human-centred use of AI.
  • GPAI is a grouping of countries in North and South America, Europe, and East Asia, which strive to work towards trustworthy development, deployment, and use of AI
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) 
  • CCS refers to technologies that can capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) at a source of emissions before it is released into the atmosphere. 
  • These sources include the fossil fuel industry (where coal, oil and gas are combusted to generate power) and industrial processes like steel and cement production.
Carbon-dioxide removal (CDR) 
  • CDR takes the forms of both natural means like afforestation or reforestation and technologies like direct air capture, where machines mimic trees by absorbing CO₂ from their surroundings and storing it underground.

 

Odisha Regional Specific News
Study on Anaemia in Odisha Context

  • A recent study conducted by the state government has found the anemia level among various age groups of people at around 46.7 per cent. 
  • It was 64.2 per cent as per the last national family health survey (NFHS-5) conducted in 2019-21.

Key points

  • Earlier Odisha was one of the highest anaemia incidence state in the country
  • Odisha have taken a huge leap in tackling the nutritional deficiency burden bringing down the overall rate by 17.5 per cent in the last year.
  • It could be done due to ‘Anaemia Mukta Laqshya Abhiyan’ (Amlan) scheme
  • The Amlan scheme was rolled out to monitor the nutrition intake and other health supplements along with testing and treatment of anaemic persons besides mapping their improvement. 
  • The Health and Family Welfare department had screened 1.31 crore people under the six categories having high anaemia rates.
Gahirmatha marine sanctuary Context

  • The influx of Olive Ridley sea turtles has marked the commencement of the annual mating rituals in the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary
  • It is recognised as the world’s largest rookery in Kendrapara district.

About Gahirmatha marine sanctuary

  • Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary is a marine wildlife sanctuary located in Odisha.
  • It extends from Dhamra River mouth in the north to Mahanadi river mouth in the south.
  • It is very famous for its nesting beach for olive ridley sea turtles.
  • It is one of the world’s most important nesting beaches for turtles.
  • This phenomenon is referred to as ‘arribada’.
Large-scale fodder plantation to tackle man-animal conflict Context

  • The state government has identified 84 ranges where a large-scale fodder plantation programme will be taken up.
  • This will be done to restrict elephant movement in forests and protect them from conflict.
  • Around 25 different kinds of fodder plant species including bamboo and palm trees will be planted in these ranges to restrict elephant movement within the forests.

  • Dasarathi Srichandan honored with the best Hati Sathi Award 2023
RBI Report on state finances Context

A report on state finances was released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently.

Key points

  • Odisha has excelled in fiscal performances as its outstanding liabilities were the lowest among all states 
  • The state’s non-tax revenue (SONTR) as a proportion of total revenue was the highest.
  • The debt-GDP ratio has declined considerably in the state and its outstanding liabilities stood at 13.9 per cent of gross state domestic product (GSDP). 
  • The proportion of SONTR of the total revenue was the highest 27.8 per cent.

Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary
  • It owes its name to the narrow stretch of River Mahanadi i.e. “Sat-Kosh” or seven miles long near Tikarpada, 60 km south of Angul.
  • The area was made a sanctuary in 1976 and spreads out in four districts of Odisha namely Angul, Budh, Cuttack and Nayagarh.
  • The Satkosia Gorge is a unique feature in geomorphology of India because here Mahanadi cuts right across the Eastern Ghats and has formed a magnificent gorge.
  • Fauna: It is known for Gharials, Mugger crocodile and rare freshwater turtles like Chitra indica and Indian softshell turtle.
