Chief Justice of India: There are three different levels of courts in our country. Each state is
divided into districts that are presided over by a District Judge. Each state has a High Court which is the highest court of that state. At the top is the Supreme Court that is located in New Delhi and is presided over by the Chief Justice of India. The decisions made by the Supreme Court are binding on all other courts in India.
Over the years, a convention had developed whereby the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court was appointed as the Chief Justice of India. This convention was however broken twice. In 1973 A. N. Ray was appointed as CJI superseding three senior Judges. Again, Justice M.H. Beg was appointed superseding Justice H.R. Khanna (1975).

Chief Justice of India: ഇന്ത്യയിലെ നീതിന്യായ വ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ തലവനാണ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ്. സുപ്രീം കോടതിയുടെ തലവനും കേസുകൾ അനുവദിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ഉത്തരവാദിത്തമുള്ള വ്യക്തിയുമാണ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ്. ഇന്ത്യൻ ഭരണഘടനയുടെ ആർട്ടിക്കിൾ 145 പ്രകാരം ജഡ്ജിമാരുടെ ബെഞ്ചിന് പ്രസക്തമായ വിഷയങ്ങൾ ഇന്ത്യൻ ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് അനുവദിക്കുന്നു. സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യാനന്തരം ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് എച്ച്.ജെ.കനിയ ആയിരുന്നു. 2022 നവംബർ 9-ന് ഇന്ത്യാ ഗവൺമെന്റ് നിയമിച്ച D.Y ചന്ദ്രചൂഡാണ് നിലവിലെ ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ്.
