Question

Which of the following statements is/are correct/incorrect?
Statement A: Brittle material is strong in compression but weak in tension.
Statement B: Ductile material is approximately equally strong tension and shear, but weak in compression.

A.

Only Statement A is correct

B.

Only Statement B is correct

C.

Both Statements A and B are incorrect

D.

Both Statements A and B are correct

Correct option is A

Brittle material is a non – linear and non – elastic material. It is strong in compression and very weak in tension. It behaves non-linearly at all time because it has essentially zero strength in Tension. It is fail due to separation of particles which load is applied at 90 degree.
Ductile materials are approximately equal strong in tension and compression but weak in shear. It is failure occurs due to principle shear stress.
