Question

Three successive discounts of 15%, 10% and 8% are equivalent to a single discount of k%. Find the value of k.

A.

27.62%

B.

28.62%

C.

29.62%

D.

30.62%

Correct option is C

Given:

Normal discount = k%

Three successive discount =15%,10% and 8%

Formula Used:

Successive Discount =D1+D2D1D2100 D_{1}+D_{2} - \frac{D_{1}D_{2}}{100}

Solution:

Substituting the values in the formulas we get:

Successive Discount = 15+10(15)(10)10015+10 - \frac{(15)(10)}{100}

= 25 - 1.5

= 23.5%

Now 23.5% and 8%

23.5+8(23.5)(8)100 23.5+8 - \frac{(23.5)(8)}{100}

= 31.5 - 1.88

= 29.62%
