Question

Three numbers are in the ratio 5 : 7 : 9, and their LCM is 1260. What is the difference between the largest and the smallest number?

A.

20

B.

32

C.

16

D.

24

Correct option is C

Given:
Ratio of three numbers = 5 : 7 : 9
LCM of the numbers = 1260

Formula Used:

LCM of numbers = LCM of coefficients ×\times x.

Solution:

If numbers are in a ratio a:b:c, then actual numbers are 5x, 7x, 9x.

LCM of numbers = LCM of (5,7,9) ×\times x

LCM of 5, 7, and 9 = 315

So, 315x = 1260

x = 1260315=4\frac{1260}{315} = 4

The numbers are:
5x = 20
7x = 28
9x = 36
Difference between largest and smallest = 36 - 20 = 16

Thus, the correct option  is (c) 16
