Question

The total of ages of X, Y and Z is 27. X is 2 years older than Y and Y is twice as old as Z. What is the age of Y?

A.

5

B.

8

C.

12

D.

10

Correct option is D

Given:
Total age of X, Y and Y = 27
X is 2 years older than Y.
Y is twice as old as Z.
Solution:
let the age of X = x
the age of Y = x – 2
age of Z = (x – 2 )/2
according to the question –
x + x -2 + (x – 2 )/2 = 27
2x – 2 + (x – 2 )/2=27
4x – 4 + x – 2 = 54
5x = 60
x = 12
then the age of Y = 12 – 2 = 10 years
