Question

The sum of money A initially had was 20% less than the sum of money B had. If B gave 16% of her money to her brother, by what percentage should A’s sum increase so that A and B finally have identical amounts?

A.

4.5%

B.

5%

C.

4%

D.

6%

Correct option is B

Given:

Sum of money A initially had is 20% less than B

B gave 16% of her money

Solution:

Let the sum of money B initially had be x

Then A had money = x - 20% of x = 0.8x

If B gives 16% of her money she is left with:

x - 16% of x = 0.84x

Now to make the sum identical A’s sum should increase by 0.84x - 0.8x = 0.04x

Percent Increase =0.04x0.8x×100=5% \frac{0.04x}{0.8x} \times 100 = 5\%
