Question

The radius of a circle is 6cm and P is any point which is 10cm away from the centre. The length of the tangent drawn from P to the circle will be

A.

6cm

B.

12cm

C.

8cm

D.

10cm

Correct option is C

Triangle OPT is a right-angled triangle, where:
OT = Radius of the circle = 6 cm
OP = Distance from the center to point P = 10 cm
PT = Length of the tangent (which we need to find)
Use the Pythagorean theorem
So, OP² = OT² + PT²
Substitute the values:
10² = 6² + PT²
100 = 36 + PT²
PT² = 100 - 36
PT² = 64
PT = √64
PT = 8 cm
