The Hindu College was established in Banaras in 1791 by Jonathan Duncan, the British Resident at Benares. It was the first modern educational institution in India and was modeled on the English public school system. The college offered a Western-style education in English, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, and Urdu.
The Hindu College was renamed the Sanskrit College in 1824. It is now part of the Banaras Hindu University.
