Question

The condition at which cavitation occurs in ogee spillway is when:

A.

the operating head on the spillway is more than the designed head

B.

the designed head on the spillway is more than the operating head

C.

the flow over the spillway changes from super-critical to sub-critical condition

D.

the inflow discharge on the spillway is less than the outflow discharge

Correct option is A

Cavitation is a phenomenon in which rapid changes of pressure in a liquid lead to the formation of small vapour filled cavities, in place where the pressure is relatively low. When subjected to higher pressure, these cavities called ‘bubbles’ which collapse and can generate an intense shock wave. The condition at which cavitation occurs in ogee spillway is when the operating head on the spillway is more than the designed head.
