    Question

The average of ten numbers is 8. If each number is divided by 2, then find the average of the new set of numbers.

    A.

    10

    B.

    4

    C.

    8

    D.

    6

    Correct option is B

    Given:

The average of 10 number is 8.

    Solution:

The average of 10 number is 8

    Sum of numbers = Average × Number of terms = 8 × 10 = 80

When each number is divided by 2, the new total sum becomes:

    New Sum = Original sum2=802=40\frac{Original\ sum}{2}= \frac{80}{2}=40

The new average is the new total sum divided by the number of terms (which remains 10):

    New Average = New SumNumber of Terms=4010=4\frac{New\ Sum}{Number\ of\ Terms}=\frac{40}{10}=4

The average of the new set of numbers is 4

Thus the correct answer is (B)
