Question

The sum of three consecutive numbers is 177. The mean of these three numbers is:

A.

60

B.

59

C.

53

D.

57

Correct option is B

Given:

Sum of three consecutive numbers = 177

Formula Used:

Mean = Sum of observationsNumber of observations\frac{Sum\ of \ observations}{Number\ of \ observations}

Solution:

Let the consecutive numbers be x, x + 1 and x+2

Then sum of numbers= x+(x+1)+(x+2) = 3x+3

3x + 3 = 177

3x = 174

x = 58

Numbers are 58,59 and 60

Mean = 58+59+603=1773=59\frac{58+59+60}{3} =\frac{177}{3} = 59

Alternate Method:

We know that sun of numbers = 177

Total number =  3

So, Mean = 1773=59\frac{177}{3} = 59
