Question

The ages of A and B are in the ratio 3 : 1. Fifteen years hence, the ratio will be 2 : 1. Their present ages are respectively:

A.

30 years, 10 years

B.

60 years, 20 years

C.

21 years, 7 years

D.

45 years, 15 years

Correct option is D

Given:
The present ages of A and B are in the ratio 3 : 1.
Fifteen years later, their ages will be in the ratio 2 : 1.
Solution:
Let:
Present age of A = 3x
Present age of B = x
After 15 years:
Age of A = 3x + 15
Age of B =  x + 15
Now,
3x+15x+15=21\frac{3x + 15}{x + 15} = \frac{2}{1}
3x + 15 = 2(x + 15)
3x + 15 = 2x + 30
x + 15 = 30
x = 15
Present age of A = 3x = 3× \times 15 = 45 years
Present age of B =  x = 15  years
The present ages of A and B are 45 years and 15 years respectively.
Option (D) is right.
