Question

Sachin’s salary was first reduced by 16% and subsequently raised by 10%. What percentage was his final salary lower compared to his initial salary?

A.

16%

B.

10%

C.

1.6%

D.

7.6%

Correct option is D

Given:

Initial reduction = 16%

Subsequent increase = 10%

Find: Final % lower than initial salary.

Formula Used:

Successive change: Net % change = a + b +ab100 \dfrac{ab}{100} (take decrease as negative).

Solution:
Here a = -16, b = +10.

Net % change = -16 + 10 +(16)(10)100+ \frac{(-16)(10)}{100}
= -6 - 1.6
= -7.6%.

Final salary is 7.6% lower than the initial salary.
