Rapid propagation technique is done in black pepper.
Rapid propagation technique
This propagation method, developed in Sri Lanka and modified for India, ensures quick multiplication of black pepper vines.
Trench Preparation
Trench dimensions: 45 cm depth, 30 cm width, and convenient length.
Fill with a rooting medium: forest soil, sand, and farmyard manure (1:1:1 ratio).
Support and Planting
Use split bamboo or PVC pipes (placed at a 45° angle, split side up).
Plant rooted cuttings in the trench, one per bamboo split.
Fill bamboo splits with a mix of coir dust and farmyard manure (1:1 ratio).
Tie vines to the bamboo, pressing nodes into the rooting medium.
Potting and Care
After rooting, cut single-node cuttings with roots intact.
Plant in polythene bags filled with fumigated potting mix (with Trichoderma (1g) and VAM (100 cc/kg soil)).
Buds develop in 3 weeks; then, shift bags to shade until ready for field planting.
Advantages
Rapid multiplication rate: 1 vine produces 40 plants.
Well-developed root system ensures better field establishment and vigorous growth.
