Question

One root of the quadratic equation x² + ax + 1 = 0 lies inside a unit circle with center at origin. Then the other root:

A.

also lies inside the circle

B.

lies outside the circle

C.

lies at the origin

D.

is equal to 1

Correct option is B

Given:

Equation: x² + ax + 1 = 0
Let roots be α and β.

Concept used:
From Vieta’s formula:
α + β = −a and αβ = 1

Solution:
Given one root, say |α| < 1 (inside unit circle).
Since αβ = 1 => |αβ| = |α| × |β| = 1
=> |β| = 1 / |α|

Now, as |α| < 1 => 1 / |α| > 1
Hence |β| > 1

So, the other root lies outside the unit circle.

Correct answer is (b) lies outside the circle.
