Question

In the question below is given a statement followed by two options numbered 1 and 2. Based on this choose the correct option.
Statement: Dioxins are highly toxic by-products and can form when plastics with BFRs are incinerated or heated in a recycling process to be re-molded into new products.
Option 1: Dioxin exposure affects brain development, disrupts thyroid and immune system functions and are associated with increased risk for cancers. Option 2: Dioxins enter the body through oral, dermal or inhalation routes and can accumulate in fatty tissues.

A.

If only option 1 is correct

B.

If only option 2 is correct

C.

If both 1 and 2 are correct

D.

If both 1 and 2 are incorrect

Correct option is C

Dioxins are a group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) formed unintentionally as by-products of industrial processes such as waste incineration, smelting, and chemical manufacturing. They are also released when plastics with brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are burned or re-molded.
Exposure to dioxins has severe toxic effects:
They interfere with brain development, especially in fetuses and children.
They disrupt thyroid hormones and impair immune system function.
Long-term exposure is linked with an increased risk of cancers, particularly due to their ability to alter gene expression. Hence, Option 1 is correct.
Dioxins enter the human body mainly through the oral route (contaminated food, especially animal fats), but they can also enter via dermal absorption and inhalation of contaminated air.
Once inside the body, dioxins are lipophilic and accumulate in fatty tissues, leading to bioaccumulation and long half-lives in the body. Hence, Option 2 is also correct.
Therefore, both Option 1 and Option 2 are correct, making the right answer Option (c).
