Question

In a survey conducted in a locality, it was found that 50% read newspaper A, 40% read newspaper B, and 20 % read neither A nor B. If the number of persons who read both A and B is 500, then how many persons were surveyed?

A.

7000

B.

3000

C.

4500

D.

5000

Correct option is D

Solution:
The percentage of people who do not read Newspaper A = 100% - 50% = 50%
The percentage of people who do not read Newspaper B = 100% - 40%= 60%.
Additionally, 20% of people do not read either Newspaper A or B.
Based on the provided chart, the percentage of people who read both Newspapers A and B = 100% - 30% - 20% - 40%=10%
If the total number of people is represented by x, then:
x × (10/100) = 500 x = 500 × 10 = 5000
Thus, the total number of people is 5000.
Alternate Method:
No of person who read either read A or read B = 100 – 20 = 80%
No of person who read both newspaper = 50+40 -80 =10%
As per the question
10% = 500
Thus, 100% = 5000.
