Question

In a mixture of 80 litres, the ratio of milk to water is 3:1. If this ratio is to be 2:3, then the quantity of water to be further added is:

A.

30 litres

B.

20 litres

C.

70 litres

D.

50 litres

Correct option is C

Given:

Volume of mixture = 80litres

Ratio of milk and water = 3:1

Solution:

Let the ratio of milk and water be 3x and x

Sum of milk and water = 3x+x = 4x

4x = 80

x = 20

Volume of milk = 3x = 60litres

Volume of water = x = 20litres

To make the mixture 2:3 the quantity of water to be added be y

Then

6020+y=23\frac{60}{20+y} =\frac{2}{3}

3(60) = 2(20+y)

180 = 40 +2y

2y = 140

y =70litres
