Question

In a meeting of 45 people, there are 40 people who know one another and the remaining know no one. People who know each other only hug, whereas those who do not know each other only shake hands. How many handshakes occur in this meeting?

A.

225

B.

10

C.

210

D.

200

Correct option is C

Given :
Total Number of People = 45
People who know one another and only hug  = 40
People who don't know anyone and do only shake hands = 5

Formula  Used:
n(n1)2\frac{n(n-1)}{2}

Solution:

  1. Handshake of 5 people with one another =   5(51)2\frac{5(5-1)}{2}=10
  2.  Handshake of 40 People who only hug with 5 people who shake hands  = 40×540\times5= 200
  3. So, Total Handshake = 10+200 = 210

Thus, the correct answer is (c) 210
