Question

In a consignment of electric bulbs, 4% were broken and from the remainder, 25% were found to be defective. If the total number of broken and defective bulbs is 112, then find the number of bulbs in the consignment.

A.

500

B.

600

C.

400

D.

700

Correct option is C

Given:

4% are broken, and from the remaining 96%, 25% are defective.

Total broken and defective bulbs = 112.

Solution:

Let the total number of bulbs be x

Broken bulbs = 4% of x = 0.04x

Remaining bulbs after broken = 96% of x = 0.96x

Defective bulbs = 25% of 0.96x =0.25×0.96x=0.24x.0.25 \times 0.96x = 0.24x.

Total broken and defective bulbs:

0.04x+0.24x=112 0.28x=1120.04x + 0.24x = 112 \implies 0.28x = 112

x=1120.28=400x = \frac{112}{0.28} = 400
