Question

If x and y are the two digits of the number 653xy such that this number is divisible by 80 , then x + y =  ?

A.

4 or 8

B.

6

C.

4

D.

8

Correct option is B

Given: If x and y are the two digits of the number 653xy such that this number is divisible by 80 .

Solution:

A number is divisible by 80 if it is divisible by both 8 and 10.

A number is divisible by 10 if its last digit is 0.

Since y is the last digit, we must have: y=0

A number is divisible by 8 if the last three digits are divisible by 8.

When,

 (653x0)(10×8)\ \frac{(653x0)}{(10 \times 8)}

Thus gives, 653x divides exactly by 8

So, the last three digits i.e., 53x  must be divisible by 8

If x = 6

Now. x + y = 6 + 0 = 6

Thus, the correct answer is (b).
