Question

If the first number and the second number is 25% and 50% more than the third number
respectively, find the respective ratio between the first and the second number.

A.

1 : 2

B.

5 : 6

C.

6 : 5

D.

2 : 1

Correct option is B

Given:

Let the third number be 'x'.

Solution:
The first number is 25% more than the third number:
First number = x+25%×x=x+25100×x=5x4x + 25\% \times x = x + \frac{25}{100} \times x = \frac{5x}{4}
The second number is 50% more than the third number:
Second number = x+50%×x=x+50100×x=3x2x + 50\% \times x = x + \frac{50}{100} \times x = \frac{3x}{2}

We have the first number as 5x4 \frac{5x}{4} and the second number as 3x2\frac{3x}{2}.
The ratio of the first number to the second number is:
5x43x2=5x4×23x=56\frac{\frac{5x}{4}}{\frac{3x}{2}} = \frac{5x}{4} \times \frac{2}{3x} = \frac{5}{6}

Answer: The ratio between the first and second numbers is 5:6.
