Question

If p and q are the roots ofx2+4x21=0x^2 + 4x - 21 = 0 and p < q . then the quadratic equation in x whose roots are (p - 1) and [q + 1) is?

A.

x2+6x+16=0x^2 + 6x + 16 = 0

B.

x2+6x16=0x^2 + 6x - 16 = 0

C.

x2+4x32=0x^2 + 4x - 32 = 0

D.

x2+4x+32=0x^2 + 4x + 32 = 0

Correct option is C

Given:

x2+4x-21 = 0,

Solution:

x2+4x21=0 x2+7x3x21=0 x(x+7)3(x+7)=0 (x3)(x+7)=0 x=3,7x^2 +4x-21=0 \\ \ \\ x^2+7x-3x-21 =0 \\ \ \\ x(x+7)-3(x+7) = 0 \\ \ \\ (x-3)(x+7) =0 \\ \ \\ x = 3, -7

then, p + 1 = 3 + 1 = 4

q - 1 = -7 - 1 = -8

So,

(x4)(x+8) =x2+8x4x32 =x2+4x32(x-4)(x+8) \\ \ \\ =x^2+8x-4x-32 \\ \ \\ = x^2 +4x-32
