Question

If 5 kg of salt costing Rs. 21 per kg and 3 kg of salt costing Rs. 25 per kg are mixed, then what is the average cost of the resulting mixture per kilogram?

A.

Rs. 23.5

B.

Rs. 21.5

C.

Rs.  22.5

D.

Rs. 24.0

Correct option is C

Given:

Price of 5kg of salt = Rs. 21 per kg

Price of 3kg of salt = Rs. 25 per kg

Formula Used:

Average cost of mixture = Total cost of components of mixtureTotal quantity of mixture \frac{Total \ cost \ of \ components \ of \ mixture}{Total \ quantity \ of \ mixture}

Solution:

Total cost of 5kg salt =21×5 21 \times 5 = Rs 105

Total cost of 3kg salt =25×3 25 \times 3 = Rs 75

Total cost of both salt used to form mixture = Rs.105 + Rs 75 = Rs 180

Average cost of mixture = 1805+3 \frac{180}{5+3}

= Rs 22.5 per kg
