    Correct option is B

    The correct answer is (B) 2016 – 17.

    • The practice of a separate budget for Railways was started in 1924.
    • It was done on the recommendations of the Acworth Committee.
    • At that time the railway budget constituted around 84% of the total budget and therefore it was recommended to separate it from the general budget.
    • But with a time budget of other ministries also started increasing and some of them even overtook the budget of Railways.
    • In 2016 the railway budget shrank to almost 15% of the total budget and hence the idea to merge it with the general budget was proposed by the Union government in 2016.
    • On February 1, 2017, the first combined budget was presented in parliament.
