From a cube of side 6 cm, a hemisphere of maximum volume is scooped out. What is the remaining volume?
Question

From a cube of side 6 cm, a hemisphere of maximum volume is scooped out. What is the remaining volume?

A.

216 - 12π

B.

216 - 18π

C.

[27 - (2π/3) × 6]

D.

36 - (3π/3)

Correct option is B

Given:

Side of cube = 6 cm.

Formula used:

Volume of cube = a3

Volume of hemisphere = 23πr3\frac{2}{3} πr^3

Solution:

Side of cube a = 6 cm

Radius of hemisphere r = 6/2= 3 cm

Volume of cube = a3 = 63 = 216 cm3

Volume of hemisphere = 23πr3\frac{2}{3} πr^3

= 23π(3)3\frac{2}{3} π(3)^3

= 23\frac{2}{3}×π×27

 = 2×π×9

 = 18π

Therefore, the remaining volume = 216 – 18π cm3
