Five children A, B, C, D and E ate mangoes. A ate 8 mangoes less then B. C and E together ate 37 mangoes. D ate 8 mangoes more than C. B ate 5 mangoes
Question

Five children A, B, C, D and E ate mangoes. A ate 8 mangoes less then B. C and E together ate 37 mangoes. D ate 8 mangoes more than C. B ate 5 mangoes more than C. B and A together ate 40 mangoes. Considering the above information, which of the following statements is correct?

A.

E ate 18 mangoes and C ate 19 mangoes.

B.

D ate 19 mangoes and C ate 27 mangoes.

C.

A ate 24 mangoes and B ate 16 mangoes.

D.

C ate 11 mangoes and B ate 16 mangoes.

Correct option is A

Solution:

Let the number of mangoes C ate be x.
A ate 8 mangoes less than B: A = B - 8
C and E together ate 37 mangoes: x + E = 37 → E = 37 – x
D ate 8 mangoes more than C: D = x + 8
B ate 5 mangoes more than C: B = x + 5
B and A together ate 40 mangoes:
B + A = 40
B + (B - 8) = 40
2B - 8 = 40
2B = 48
B = 24
Now, calculate the values for A, C, D, and E:
A = 24 - 8 = 16
B = 24
C = B - 5 = 24 - 5 = 19
D = C + 8 = 19 + 8 = 27
E = 37 - C = 37 - 19 = 18
