Given:

Amit = 6 hours, Gopal = 42 hours, Together with Akshay = 3 hours

Solution:

Let, Time for Akshay alone = x hours

16+142+1x=13 421+1x=13 1x=13421=321=17\dfrac{1}{6} + \dfrac{1}{42} + \dfrac{1}{x} = \dfrac{1}{3} \\ \ \\\dfrac{4}{21} + \dfrac{1}{x} = \dfrac{1}{3} \\ \ \\\dfrac{1}{x} = \dfrac{1}{3} - \dfrac{4}{21} = \dfrac{3}{21} = \dfrac{1}{7} 

x = 7 hours.

Alternate Solution:

Assume total work = LCM(6, 42) = 42 units.
Amit’s rate =426= \frac {42}6= ​7 units/hour; Gopal’s rate =4242 \frac{42}{42} ​= 1 unit/hour.
In 3 hours, Amit + Gopal do 3 × (7 + 1) = 24 units.
Remaining work = 42 - 24 = 18 units,

done by Akshay in 3 hours

Akshay’s rate = 183\frac{18}3 ​= 6 units/hour.
Time for Akshay alone = 426\frac {42}6​= 7 hours.
