Question

Ages of a mother and daughter are in the ratio 12 : 5. Ten years hence, she will be twice as old as her daughter. What is the sum of their ages at present?

A.

85

B.

65

C.

60

D.

75

Correct option is A

Given:
Age ratio = 12:5.
Ten years hence, the mother will be twice as old as her daughter

Solution:
Let the present ages of the mother and daughter be 12x and 5x respectively.
In 10 years, the mother’s age will be 12x + 10 and the daughter’s age will be 5x + 10.
According to the problem:
12x + 10 = 2(5x + 10).
12x + 10 = 10x + 20.
2x = 10 → x = 5.
Thus, the mother’s current age is 12x = 60 and the daughter’s current age is 5x = 25.
Their sum is 60 + 25 = 85.
