Question

A thief is spotted by a policeman from a distance of 100 meters. When the policeman starts the chase, the thief also starts running. If the speed of the thief is 8 km/hr and that of the policeman is 10 km/hr, how far will the thief have run before he is overtaken?

A.

380 meters

B.

396.6 meters

C.

375 meters

D.

410 meters

Correct option is B

Ans. (b) 400 meters
Sol.
Let’s convert their speeds from km/hr to m/s:
Speed of thief = (8 × 1000) ÷ 3600 = 2.22 m/s
Speed of policeman = (10 × 1000) ÷ 3600 = 2.78 m/s
Relative speed = 2.78 − 2.22 = 0.56 m/s
Initial distance between them = 100 meters
Time taken to overtake = 100 ÷ 0.56 ≈ 178.57 seconds
Now, distance run by the thief in that time = 2.22 × 178.57 ≈ 396.6 meters,
