    Question

A boy was set to multiply 495 by 36, but reading one of the digits in the question erroneously, he obtained 16740 as his answer. Which digit did he read erroneously?

    A.

    9

    B.

    8

    C.

    2

    D.

    7

    Correct option is A

    Given :
    Correct multiplication to be done = 495 ×3\times 36
    Wrong answer obtained = 16740
    One digit was read incorrectly.

    Formula Used :
Correct value = Wrong value ± Error

    Solution :

    Correct multiplication:
    495 ×\times 36 = 17820

Difference between correct and wrong result:
    17820 - 16740 = 1080

Now check which digit change can cause an error of 1080.

Assume digit 9 in 495 was read wrongly as 6
    Then number becomes 465

    Check:
    465×36= \times 36 = 16740
    This matches the wrong answer.

    Conclusion :
The digit 9 was read erroneously as 6.

    Answer :Digit 9
