A beam of deutrons is bombarded on ordinary sodium (23/11 Na) atoms. Which one of the following could be a product together with a neutron?
    Question

A beam of deutrons is bombarded on ordinary sodium (23/11 Na) atoms. Which one of the following could be a product together with a neutron?

    A.

    24/12 Mg

    B.

    20/10 Ne

    C.

    27/13 Al

    D.

    24/11 Na

    Correct option is A

    Correct answer is A
    Calculation:
The reaction can be written as:
    H21 + Na2311 ⇒ X + n
Here, X is the unknown product, and n represents a neutron (n10).
    Conservation of mass number:
    Mass number on the left = 2 + 23 = 25
Mass number on the right = Mass number of X + 1 (neutron)
    So, Mass number of X = 25 - 1 = 24
    Conservation of atomic number:
    Atomic number on the left = 1 + 11 = 12
Atomic number on the right = Atomic number of X + 0 (neutron)
    So, Atomic number of X = 12
    Therefore, X is Mg2412 (magnesium).
