Question

y varies directly as (x+3), and y = 8 when x = 1. What is the value of y when x = 2?

A.

10

B.

5

C.

8

D.

2

Correct option is A

Given:

y varies directly as (x + 3), i.e.,

y = k(x + 3)

where k is the constant of proportionality.

y = 8 when x = 1

Solution:

y = k(x + 3)

Now,  given condition y = 8 when x = 1:

8 = k(1 + 3)

8 = k × 4

k = 84\frac{8}{4} = 2

Now,  k = 2 and x = 2 into the equation y = k(x + 3):

y = 2(2 + 3)

y = 2 × 5 =10

Thus, the value of y when x = 2 is 10
